HZLB

Biography

HZLB pronounced Hazel B is one of the original handful of female DJ / Producers from Europe’s early 90’s House & Techno music’s international underground club scene (Love Parade, Berlin).

HZLB was introduced to her first studio partner, Andy Sherriff (Chapterhouse), by mutual friend Tom Middleton (Global Communication) in ’94 and between 1995 and 96. HZLB went on to co-produce her first solo compositions, including ‘Evil Knevil,’ with Andy in their studio in Camden. HZLB released under the artist name ‘human’ on her independent label ‘human records’ in 1997-99 along with then label partner Lee Grainge.

It was after her move to Bristol in 1999 that HZLB met many members of the of the local music scene including great friends & vocalists ‘Thea Love’ & Trudi Veremu aka ’Thelma Rose’ and later on Bristol’s legendary guitarist Angelo Bruschini through mutual friend, engineer Andy Henderson in the early 00’s.

Fast forward to 2018, whilst living in South Yorkshire, HZLB met legendary Sheffield producer & engineer Alan Smyth (Arctic Monkeys & Reverend and The Makers). Under Alan’s expert tutelage they began the quest of reprogramming some of HZLB’s old demos along with the new works, however the Covid pandemic brought Alan & HZLB’s work to an abrupt halt. HZLB relocated back to Bristol in 2021 & started work on ‘Reprogram’ again supported by talented engineer Rob Cansino (Safe ’N’ Sound). Over the next two years Rob and HZLB worked tirelessly, continuing to develop HZLB’s productions and skills bringing HZLB’s ‘Reprogram’ album home.

HZLB’s debut album ‘Reprogram’ showcases powerful collaborations with an impressive roster of talent, including guitarist Angelo Bruschini (Massive Attack & The Blue Aeroplanes) and vocalists Thelma Rose (Digital Roses) and Thea Love (Flynn & Flora).

Across 12 meticulously crafted tracks HZLB delivers her signature blend of left-field electronica, proudly displaying several of life’s battle scars throughout this album. Contributing artists Thea Love and Thelma Rose both deliver more brave and honest lyrics with vocal performances that soar over HZLB’s synthwave landscapes, resulting in intricate tapestries of beautifully produced electronica being woven together throughout this compelling debut album.

The album marks the launch of HZLB’s independent DIY label ‘PHONO’.
